CS Executive Passing Criteria And Exemption Rules

Students often search for the CS Executive pass percentage when they want to know the minimum marks needed to clear a paper or group. Under ICSI’s rules, the usual requirement is at least 40% in each paper and 50% in the aggregate for the group. The pass rate published for an examination session is a different figure: it shows the proportion of candidates who passed and can vary by session.

What Is The CS Executive Passing Criteria?

Under the 2022 syllabus, the CS Executive Programme has two groups. To pass a group, you must score:

  • At least 40% in each paper you are required to attempt
  • At least 50% in the aggregate of the papers in that group

If you appear for both groups together, you need at least 40% in each paper you are required to attempt and 50% in the aggregate across the papers taken at that sitting. The requirement is based on marks at one sitting.

For example, if you attempt four papers in a group, scoring 40% or more in every paper is not enough by itself. Your combined marks for the group must also reach 50%.

How Does The Aggregate Requirement Work?

The aggregate is calculated from the papers you are required to attempt at that sitting, subject to ICSI’s applicable rules for exemptions. A score below 40% in any required paper generally means you have not met the group criteria, even if your overall average is 50% or higher.

If you have a paper-wise exemption, check your examination enrolment details and admit card. The papers you must attempt and the marks used for your result can depend on the exemption granted. ICSI’s current qualifying marks notice and applicable regulations should be checked for your specific case.

Can You Get An Exemption After Scoring 60% In A Paper?

A 60% paper-wise exemption may be available when you fail a group despite scoring 60% or more in one or more papers. Under ICSI’s stated criteria, you must have appeared in the papers of the group for which you enrolled and scored at least 25% in each of the remaining papers. If these conditions are met, you may be exempt from reappearing in the paper or papers where you scored 60% or more in a later examination.

When you use this exemption, the marks from the exempted paper are not counted toward the aggregate for the papers you take later. You must meet the minimum marks and aggregate requirements for the remaining papers under the rules that apply to your attempt. Check ICSI’s exemption FAQ before enrolling.

What If You Fail Only One Paper?

A separate provision may apply if you appeared in all papers of a group without an existing paper exemption, failed in only one paper and secured at least 60% of the total marks in the remaining papers. In that case, the remaining papers may be exempted in a subsequent examination; you must then score at least 50% in the paper you failed to pass the group. Confirm the conditions in the current ICSI regulations and exemption guidance before relying on this provision.

Can Higher Qualifications Give You A Paper Exemption?

ICSI also has a separate scheme for paper-wise exemptions based on certain higher qualifications. For example, its published syllabus 2022 exemption document lists an exemption in Jurisprudence, Interpretation & General Laws for eligible law graduates who meet the stated qualification and marks conditions. It also lists exemptions for eligible final-pass students of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. These are qualification-based exemptions, separate from exemptions earned through examination marks.

Eligibility, required documents, paper codes and application deadlines matter. Check ICSI’s Reciprocal & Corresponding Exemptions page for the current rules and forms before submitting an application.

Passing Marks And Exemptions: What To Check Before Enrolment

Before submitting your examination form, confirm:

  • The group and papers you are enrolled to attempt
  • Any exemption shown in your ICSI student account
  • Whether an exemption is based on marks, qualification or syllabus switchover
  • The applicable application deadline and documentation
  • Whether the exemption appears correctly in your examination records

Do not assume an exemption has been applied simply because you meet a condition. Verify it through ICSI and review your examination documents before the session.

FAQs

What Is The Minimum Passing Percentage For CS Executive?

The standard requirement is at least 40% in each paper you are required to attempt and 50% in the aggregate for the group. If both groups are taken together, the aggregate requirement applies across the papers attempted at that sitting, subject to applicable exemption rules.

Does 40% In Every Paper Guarantee A Pass?

No. You also need to meet the 50% aggregate requirement for the group or groups you are attempting.

If I Score 60% In One Paper, Will I Automatically Get An Exemption?

Not automatically. The 60% exemption has additional conditions, including the required marks in the remaining papers. Check ICSI’s current exemption guidance and confirm that the exemption is recorded for your account.

Is The CS Executive Pass Rate The Same As The Passing Criteria?

No. Passing criteria are the marks an individual candidate must meet. A session’s pass rate is the percentage of candidates who passed in that session.
