ICSI CS Course Duration: A Complete Guide to Becoming a Company Secretary

Introduction

Thinking about becoming a Company Secretary? Then one of the first things you want to know is: how long does the ICSI CS Course Duration take?

The short answer: 2 to 3 years, depending on where you start and how consistently you clear your exams. The ICSI CS course is offered by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and is divided into three levels CSEET, CS Executive, and CS Professional.

And here’s something important if you are planning to register in 2026: ICSI has officially restructured the CSEET from the June 2026 session onwards. The exam is no longer conducted from home (remote-proctored). It is now held at offline exam centres. This is the biggest change to the CS entry test in years and every new student must know this before they plan their timeline.

This guide walks you through every level, every route, and every factor that affects how long it takes verified directly from ICSI.

ICSI CS Course: Three Levels at a Glance

The CS course has three levels, and each one builds on the previous:

Total ICSI CS Course Duration: 2 to 3 years (without training) or up to 3 to 5 years including the mandatory 21-month practical training required before full ICSI membership.

What Factors Affect Your CS Course Timeline?

Even with the best plan, your actual duration can vary. Here is what impacts it:

Exam attempts: Every failed attempt adds 6 months to your timeline, since exams are held twice a year. Part 3 (CS Professional) has a lower first-attempt pass rate so consistent, structured preparation matters more here.

Study pace: Students with prior commerce or law knowledge often move faster through the syllabus. Those from non-commerce backgrounds may need extra time on certain subjects.

Training requirements: To become an Associate Member of ICSI (and use the ACS designation), you must complete 21 months of management training. This training runs alongside or after your Professional exam but it is a mandatory part of the full CS journey.

Work commitments: Many CS students are working professionals. Balancing a job alongside exam prep typically extends the timeline by 6 to 12 months.
